I finally have made a rating scale! I will start implementing this into my posts to give you all more of an accurate gauge of the places I share.
5 – Euphoric; a stand-out destination that should be on everyone’s list of places to go. I will often be seen making an “O” face and possibly tearing up as I savor the deliciousness.
4 – Very Good; definitely worth coming back for repeat visits and telling your friends/family.
3 – Good, but not on the heavy rotation list. This means that this restaurant is not my first choice of restaurants and will seek out other dining options.
2 – Palatable, but only if there aren’t other options. The food tasted decent, but I could have made something better at home myself.
1 – Awful; I will never eat there again.
I consider many factors in my rating including alcoholic beverages, coffee/tea, service, ambiance, and food quality/options. I evaluate the number of options on the menu, the number of options I would actually consider ordering, and the number of vegetarian/vegan options.
Breeze Bakery Cafe
I took a day trip to this adorable little bakery located in Annandale VA. There was so much to look at. If you are a lover of sweet bread you should definitely plan a trip here, you will not regret it.
This is only a small portion of what they had to offer. I spent about an hour looking at everything. (灬ºωº灬) I don’t think even with that amount of time I was able to take everything in. At the end my partner and I ended up with a basket full of different filled buns and two bubble smoothies.
My partner got the Chai Vanilla boba drink, which was so delicious I was holding back stealing it. I got Taro which is a yummy classic. The breads were interesting, Korean style bread is very different from what Americans have, it is very sweet! We ended up sitting on the patio since it was nice out. It was nice and covered little birdies came up every now and then to try and steal a taste. The first thing I decided to devour was the fried mochi filled with red bean, amazing~! I also got a bun filled with fresh fruit and whipped cream, I wish I had another right now!
Food: Good. This place is so cute! There are so many different treats here, definitely a place you need to visit a few times.
Lamplighter coffee warms that little hipster place in my heart.
Lamplighter is one of my favorite local coffee shops. There are two locations in the city, located on Morris St. and Addison St. If you want to relax and enjoy your coffee, the Addison street location is the only way to go. Parking is a lot less hectic, not as crowded, and open seating. Morris St. is right in the middle of VCU territory, the only justification for going here is if you want to get some people watching in, otherwise stay away.
The baristas here know how to make a very good cup of coffee and how to decorate it in a way to make you feel fancy. My favorite for the summer has to be the Thai Iced coffee, rich, strong, and just the right amount of sweet. On the cooler days I stick to the Brown Sugar Baby, light, creamy, and sweet without being too overbearing. Even though my two favorite drinks are sweet it’s presented in away that you still know you are drinking what you came there for, coffee.
This is a great quick brunch spot, their food is awesome! My favorite sandwich is the Soy Chorizo, Twin Oaks chorizo, havarti, avocado, and tomato. It’s filling, rich, and has the smallest hint of spice from the scrumptious Twin Oaks chorizo. I have a hard time getting anything else on the menu because that sandwich is just too amazing. Lamplighter also does this wonderful thing where they sell breakfast all day long. So if you are a late riser like I can occasionally be stop by!
Food: Very Good. The coffee is so good! This place is perfect if you need to grab and go, or just a place to meet up with friends and catch up over some delicious coffee.
Umami is a the cutest local tea shop off of Lakeside in Richmond VA. The first time I went was a few months ago for brunch. I was overwhelmed, to say the least, with all the different variations of tea.
The staff is always super friendly and helpful. I’ve tried a few other local tea shops and nothing compares. This tea shop is wonderful for getting little gifts for friends, family, and more importanly myself.
Location: 6920-C Lakeside Avenue
Richmond, VA 23228
Food: Good. Their tea is wonderful and the prices are too. They do have food here but I would skip the food and just go for the tea.
I found this little hidden gem located in a gas station of all places.
It may not be the best presentation, on the metal tray, but the quality of taste makes up for all of that and some. The prices are also very reasonable as well, for this veggie platter the total is around 7$. I haven’t quite figured out their hours though. I’ve also slipped up a few times and missed their lunch completely. ●︿● This place by far my favorite Indian restaurant in RVA, or really ever to be honest.
One of my coworkers suggested this place almost a year ago, I have been a regular ever since. I thought it couldn’t be but so bad with what I was hearing about it from different coworkers, it is a also less than a mile from my job, so one day I stopped by, took one bit and I was in love. Everything was full of flavor with just the right amount of spice. The platter changes daily so it is always fun to see what you will get next visit. What always included is rice, naan, 3 different veggie side dishes, Thayir Saadam, veggie samosas, and a dessert of some kind.
I can’t put into words of how much I am in love with this place. If you ever have the chance to visit for lunch do yourself a favor and GO.
Food: Very Good. This place has amazing food at an amazing price. Market Cafe is perfect for lunch and take-out.
Let’s start with the wonderful dessert only restaurant that appeared in my first post.
I was lucky enough to be able to go to this decadently delicious cafe a few weekends back. It was an experience to say the least. My partner brought me here knowing how much I enjoy sweets, and it was amazing. Looking at the menu I had a difficult time choosing between all of the incredible looking items. I finally selected the Fresh Fruit Cake and a hot coffee drink, that I can’t recall the name off, and my partner chose the Salted Chocolate Caramel Cake and the Banana Coffee Cooler (banana lover).
If you can’t tell by the photos, the slices were huge.
We could have realistically ordered 1 slice and it would have been more than enough. My drink somehow tasted exactly like the best kind of marshmallow, the burnt kind. The icing wasn’t too sweet which is something I often encounter and loathe. The cool cake was the perfect pairing to my warm marshmallow beverage, I took the first bite of my cake and it practically melted in my mouth. Yum The chocolate cake on the other hand is everything you could hope for when you are a chocolate lover, like myself. It was rich, deep, and most importantly chocolatey. The salted caramel gave it that extra oomph that made you want to melt into your seat.
I will definitely be returning, next time I will just remember to bring more people to share those massive cake slices with.
Food: Good. This is a place with a niche. Shyndigz is perfect for a date, double date, or when you really need something sweet and a lot of it. The menu changes often so there’s always something new.
My name is Sasha. I am a 24 year old female living in Richmond Virginia and I love good food.
I’m not a gourmet and I’m an amateur writer at best, these entries will just be a chronicle of all my food adventures.
I will be sharing all my favorite local restaurants/breweries/etc., rave about the new places I enjoyed, posts some of the many photos I take of food, record my numerous successes and failures in the kitchen, as well as my experiences at my cooking classes, and more!
